Night Owl Cosmetics: August Mystery Box Review

Standard

So, as I’ve said in some of my other posts, I have a nasty allergy to parabens, and probably a few other ingredients in a lot of mainstream or cheap makeup.  I use to be subscribed to Ipsy, but it ended up not being worth it to me because I was allergic to half the stuff I got in it.  I’ve been on a search to try some indie/artisan mystery boxes, since they seem so far, to not irritate me.  I found Night Owl Cosmetics and saw she has a monthly mystery box.

The difference between a mystery box and subscription box like Ipsy is that you don’t have the money automatically taken out each month, you have to go an purchase it each month.  This is nice because if you don’t have money one month you don’t have to go through the hassle of canceling a subscription.  Plus, all the items are made by Night Owl Cosmetics personally, so you know who hand their hands in the product you’re getting.  So now for some photos!

image

I love that you get a card listing each thing you recieved and the details.  It’s nice for reordering, plus it’s all in one place.  The packaging is also very nice and makes you feel like you got a present!

I loved everything in this box.  My first thought when I opened the package was, “What is this amazing smell?!?”.  It was the Pink Sugared Grapefruit Wax Tart.  Now, I didn’t own a tart warmer before getting this box, but I sure as heck have one now.  The tart lasted for a long time, and smelled just as amazing melted as it did in the package.  I was very sad when it was done.  As of this writing there won’t be tarts in the shop at the grand opening on August 31, but will be in the near future.

Now for the perfume!  I haven’t found a lot of perfume oils I like.  Most are too strong or irritate my skin.  Not with Beach Tea Party!  No irritation at all, and smells amazing too.  I used it as soon as I got it.  I’m planning on getting the full size roller ball perfume as soon as I run out of the sample size.  My husband even said it smelled really good.

I also got two polishes in the mystery box, Nude My Frank and Blue Shark.  Nude My Frank is up first.

image

First photo is in shade, second is in the sun.  I really enjoy the nude polish with the bright contrast of the glitters, and I’m not usually a nude colored type of gal.

image

There is a lot of sparkle in this too, the photos really don’t do it justice, you just have to see it in person.  I did have to fish just a little bit for the bigger glitter, but it wasn’t too bad.  I did have both of the polishes sitting upside down before use to help move the large glitters to the top.  I did two layers of polish to reach opacity with this one.

image

Same as above, first photo is in the shade and the second is in the sun.  Blue Shark is a white crelly with tons of glitter, no fishing at all in this one.  I love this one a lot, it’s definitely more in my normal choice spectrum.   I’ve been on a severe white with colored glitter kick recently too.

image

This polish is totally drool worthy.  I used 3 layers of polish to reach this coverage.  Both polishes dried pretty quickly, but I’d definitely recommend dry time between layers with both of them, they stayed squishy for a little bit.

With both polishes I did a layer of Duri Revacote,  then Orly Bonder, and topped both with ellagee’s topcoat glass.

The only small complaint I had about this box was that the wax from the tart was kind of on everything, so I had to wipe it all down after I took it out. I would like to see it wrapped in a small amount of tissue paper, or some type of paper, just to keep it from rubbing on the other items and leaving the residue. Otherwise this was a giant hit for me, I loved everything else about it.

Night Owl Cosmetics has her grand opening scheduled for August 31.  Check out her Facebook and Instagram for updates on everything, it should be a fun opening!  As always, thanks for reading! ^_^

Cameo Colours Lacquers: Catwalk Claws Review

Standard

This is my very first midweek review!  I’m going to try to have one every week, but we will see how it goes.  I decided I couldn’t wait any longer and just had to try out Catwalk Claws from Cameo Colours Lacquers.  At the time of this writing it is currently sold out. [EDIT: Cameo contacted me and let me know it is now back in stock, and can be purchased here.] Here is the description taken straight from the site:

” Created to honor New York Fashion Week via a contribution by The Artisan Group to GBK’s NY Fashion Week Celebrity Gifting Event, Catwalk Claws is a gray jelly polish with a shifting pink to purple shimmer, fully of holographic silver, purple, and metallic purple microglitters.”

When I saw this one I had to have it, and oh boy, I’m glad I got it. When I move it around in light it reminds me of camera flashes, like on a red carpet.

image

You can see a hint of sparkle even in the bottle.  Now as normal with micro glitter polish it dries to a textured finish.  I forgot to take a photo before I added topcoat (oops), but it still looks gorgeous with two layers of ellagee’s topcoat glass.

image

Top left photo is in shade, below it is flash and to the right is in sunlight.  I did a simple accent nail using a vinyl strip and mylar with a purple stone to put it all together. This polish has layers to its beauty for sure.  Here’s some macro shots to show off all the glitter.

image

It was opaque in two coats, and dried quickly.  I used Duri Revacote,  and then Orly Bonder, two layers of the polish and two layers of ellagee’s topcoat glass.  It was a little hard to do clean up on, but glitter is always stubborn and I was trying a new polish remover as well, so that may have been it.  If you haven’t checked Cameo Colours Lacquers before, I hope you will now!  Thanks for reading! ^_^

I,A.M…CustomColor: Zim’s Giant Radioactive Pants Review

Standard

This week I am reviewing I,A.M…CustomColor’s polish inspired by the television show Invader Zim.  This one is called Zim’s Giant Radioactive Pants,  and is a red/orange linear holo. My husband picked this one for me since I couldn’t decide.  Sadly since I purchased this color it has been discontinued, at least for now.  She does still have a few colors left inspired from the series here.  A lot of items in her shop are currently on sale, so I would definitely recommend looking through all of it, plus shipping is included. She has many other products besides polish too, like bath products and makeup.  Now on to the packaging!

image

The packaging was super adorable.  As soon as I took these pictures my 5 year old daughter stole the pipe cleaner, bag and mustache ring.  I’m going to do a review on the eyeshadows as well at some point, my allergies were just kicking my butt this week.  Everything was wrapped nicely and arrived safe and in a timely manner.

image

Top left is in shade, below it is with flash and to the right is in direct sunlight.   I went with a simple theme to not hide all the glorious holo shine.  I used green rhinestones for Zim/Gir and stars for outerspace, since they are aliens. ^_^  I love how much holo is packed into this polish.  It screams out sparkles in person.  The polish was a great consistency, dried quickly and was opaque in two coats.  Products used for this mani was a layer of Duri Rejuvacode, Orly Bonder, 2 coats of the polish and ellagee’s Glass Topcoat. Now it’s time for the macro shots.

image

image

I did two macros this time just because this one needed some showing off.  Both were taken under LED light to show holo.

I absolutely love this polish, and everything about it.  No complaints at all.  I’m hoping to pick a few more up from the remaining Zim themed polishes when I can.  Definitely check out her whole shop, once again it’s I,A.M…CustomColor.  Thanks for reading. ^_^

Update 8.20.14

Standard

There has been an uptake in entries for the giveaway since Lace and Lacquers put up this post, so get your entries in!  There’s about 6 days left and counting down.  Also, I’m still going to be covering makeup, since this did start out as a makeup blog, but I think I’m not going to be doing makeup and nails half and half any more.  It’s going more towards polish and nails and nail art, but don’t worry, if there are any indie/artisan brand requests I will do my best to make sure to review them, whether they be nail polish or makeup.  I’m going to be posting a picture over on the instagram tonight of things that are going to be reviewed in the next few weeks.  Also, I’m entertaining the idea of doing 2 reviews a week instead of one, but I have to see how my daughter starting kindergarten is first.  This would mean I wouldn’t be able to show a week a wear on nail polish any more like I do on instagram each week, but I would still post the wear for how many days I did wear it if you guys still like that idea.  Well, that’s it for now, make sure to follow me on facebook and instagram for other and more updates.  Thanks for reading!! ^_^

Sons of Anarchy Mani: Ellagee Vashta Nerada & Lacquer By Lissa Review

Standard

This week’s review is a little smaller, but is still a few products.  I decided to give ellagee another review since my technique has gotten better since the last review I did of her products.  I also got vinyl nail decals from Lacquer By Lissa.  I contacted Lissa with an idea to do decals based on the show Sons of Anarchy.  She was extremely helpful and easy to work with.  If you have something you want on your nails in decal form, she’s the lady to talk to. We settled on the decals you’ll see, and I was beyond pleased with the end result.  If you don’t know Sons of Anarchy I suggest checking it out.  It’s about a gun running biker club, but it’s so much better than that. First up, the products I used for this week’s mani.

image

I used Ghostwood from Geek Chic Cosmetics for a base on my accent nail to do a gradient look with Vashta Nerada from ellagee and Celeb City from Sally Hansen.  Here is a picture of the information on the bottles for color.

image

I used ellagee’s glass topcoat, and oh boy, this stuff is completely and totally awesome.  It dried quickly, self leveled and shines oh so bright.  I think it’s going to be my holy grail top coat, I’ll keep you guys updated on it as I use it over time. Now time for the mani!

image

The above picture was taken in shade.

image

The above picture was taken in direct sunlight.

The decals from Lacquer By Lissa were easy to use.  The nice thing about these is if you let your nails dry completely, crucial step, you can keep readjusting them till you get them where you want. I didn’t notice any shrinkage or curling of them after the top coat was applied either.  Vashta Nerada,  inspired by one of the villians of Doctor Who and one of the scariest bad guys in my opinion, is gorgeous.   I was looking for a blacked blue for this look, but didn’t want it to be simple.  This definitely is not. It has sparkles of silver and even purple in it when you take a close look at it.  It was opaque with 2 coats and dried quickly, like most ellagee polishes.  This is still my current obsession brand, just because I haven’t been disappointed by one of her polishes yet.  Here is a macro shot to show detail.

image

If you haven’t tried either of these ladies’ stores out, I highly recommend it!  I will definitely be going to Lissa for more decals as idea strike me, and Laura from ellagee isn’t going to stop making polishes I obsess over any time soon.

If you want to purchase from either of them please visit ellagee here and Lacquer By Lissa here.  Direct links to products used below.

Lacquer By Lissa Sons of Anarchy Decals
ellagee Vashta Nerada Polish
ellagee Glass Top Coat

Sally Hansen Celeb City

It was definitely fun using two products based on two of my favorite shows, and as always, thanks for reading!! ^_^

Tater Rounds Beauty – Zombie Girl Collection Review

Standard

Welcome everyone!   This week I decided to take on a challenge and review a whole collection, rather than just a polish or just makeup.  I found Tater Rounds Beauty a while back on etsy, just doing my normal browse through indies that I do.  I decided to pick something up from one of the many indie vendors I have saved on etsy and came across the Zombie Girl Collection on her page.  Not only did it have an awesome theme and purple stuff, god do I love purple, it was on sale too.  At the time of this writing she does still have it available and on sale, if you don’t see it up, definitely contact her, she is very easy to talk to.  She also send a nice amount of samples my way.  I didn’t do a look with them, but they are swatched.

So first, the packaging.  It came in a media sized flat rate postal box with tissue paper and packing peanuts.   Then everything inside was packaged like this.

image

The green bag contained the collection and the pink envelope contained the samples.  Everything was wrapped well, and nothing was damaged in shipping.  Here is everything once I opened it all up.

image

You gotta love those cute little piggies!  Now, on her listings it says she doesn’t use labels, but obviously my shadows and samples had them.  She may just be switching over at this point and need to redo descriptions.  I like labels personally,  so I know what color I need to look for if I want to reorder.  As far as I know all items in this collection can be ordered seperately accept the Zombie color, but she does say contact her if you would like to order in the listing.

Here are the descriptions of everything that came in the collection,  taken straight from the listing.

Eyeshadows
Violet Eyes – metallic shimmer purple
Dark Horse- A satin pure black, dark as the night sky
Purple Swim Suit – A super bright purple with golden shimmer
Zombie – A limey yellow green with a intense shimmer

Lip Gloss
Seductive Berry- A berry purpleish red

Nail Polish
Virus – A purple blue mix of color with black glitter mixed through it

And now some swatches to show all the sparkly goodness.  If you want to see a video go here.

image

All colors are listed, first photo is with flash and second is in natural light. The first 4 are what are included in the collection, and the last 4 are the samples I recieved. Shadow above description was applied without primer, below was, using my go to MBA’s Shadow Poxy .  Obviously as per norm, colors are darker and cling better to the primer, and that’s why I always recommend it. The colors were still very pigmented without the primer as well, just a softer look.  I really liked all the colors, and everything applied well and “clung” to the primer on my lid.  Violet Eyes is my favorite by far, super sparkly and looks amazing put on with a damp brush.

Here’s the swatch of the included lip gloss, Seductive Berry, and the sample, Black Orchid.

image

Both applied well and had great pigment, I’m probably going to pick up a full size of Black Orchid when I run out of the sample.   The only warning I have here is to keep it in a cool place.  My upstairs isn’t air conditioned and it got pretty soft, but that’s pretty normal with the organic stuff.  It still applied well, I just needed to be more gentle with it.

Here is the look I did with the collection.

image

Everything stayed on very well. I put Purple Swim Suit all over the lid as a base then blended Violet Eyes into the outer corner and into the middle. Then I used Dark Horse in the crease and used a little more Purple Swim Suit to blend it out and up.  I used Zombie along the lower lash line and around the tear duct and blended that in to the lid. I lined my waterline with UD’s Black Velvet and did mascara on upper and lower lashes.

Other Products Used
-Urban Decay Naked Foundation in 1.0
-Geek Chic Cosmetics Foundation Powder in Codex
-Geek Chic Blush in Newb
-Urban Decay 24/7 Eyeliner in Black Velvet on the waterline
-Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara
-Smashbox Brow Tech Trio in Taupe/Soft Brown

Up next, nail polish!  It was opaque at 3 coats and has a unique look with the micro glitter and the larger black glitter.  It dried quicky, and had plenty of glitter in each swipe, so I didn’t need to dig for it at all.  For the nail art I attempted the make your own nail sticker method, and and added blue rhinestones.  I think it looks ok, but this was my first attempt at nail art.  The first shot is in shade and the second is in direct sunlight.

image

And here is the micro shot.

image

And that’s it.  I tried to make it not terribly picture heavy, but there was a lot to show!  Overall I’m happy with the whole set and will be purchasing more.  If you want to buy this set click here and to visit her main site click here. Thanks for reading. ^_^
